Self-Exclusion

Self-Exclusion

Self-exclusion (or self-banning) is a voluntary process whereby a person with a gambling concern can have themselves excluded from specific gambling venues, or from accessing gambling products provided by particular providers.

Self-exclusion

Some people find self-exclusion works better with counselling. Talking over the issues with an online counsellor could really help.

When a person is barred from a venue they are not allowed to enter or remain on the licensed premise or the gaming area they have nominated.

The venue/s or gambling providers are expected to take all reasonable steps to prevent a person from entering the venue or accessing the product. They have the right to remove the person from a gambling area if they are found to be in breach of the self-exclusion agreement.

Online self-exclusion

If the gaming site is registered in Australia, the company is obligated to provide information on responsible gaming which includes information on self-exclusion. It is not always easy to find the information and for some sites it is easier for the person to call the customer service number, identify that they have a problem with gambling online and request information on how to exclude from the site.  If you are interested in having a look some examples with links are provided below:

  1. Tattersalls
  2. Lotto
  3. Sportsbet

Products such as GamBlock  can also be purchased. If you are interested in knowing more about this particular product, you can access an overview by clicking here.

Internet Activity Monitoring software packages. These products often target parents wanting to prevent underage children accessing the site but are also an option for callers. Examples of these include:

www.cybersitter.com

www.surfwatch.com

Self-exclusion process

For venue self-exclusion, the program participant is guided through the process of signing a deed of self-exclusion, nominating the venue/s or areas of a venue they will be excluded from and, agreeing that they will not enter the restricted gaming area.

Photographs of the participant are then taken and displayed to appropriate staff members of the nominated gaming venue/s. Client details are treated with discretion at all times.

There is no charge for voluntary self-exclusion for gaming venues.
