Gambling Help Queensland
Gambling Help Queensland is a free service delivered by a network of community-based specialist agencies that provide counselling and support to people experiencing harm from gambling, their families and friends. They deliver community education, training, and participate in networking activities aimed at community members interested in understanding about responsible and problem gambling.
If English is not your first language, support is available for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
What kind of support are you looking for?
If you are concerned about your gambling (or someone else’s) call the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 for free and confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Services include:
- telephone counselling
- crisis support
- information and referral to the closest Gambling Help service for face-to-face assistance.
Free counselling and support services are available to gamblers and their families and friends throughout Queensland. Counselling can be delivered face-to-face or via a virtual meeting.

A fellowship of people who share their experience strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from a gambling problem.
Kids Helpline
The Kids Helpline is a free, 24/7 telephone counselling service available to young people aged 5-25 years.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crisis support
13 YARN is the first national crisis support line for mob who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. They offer a confidential one-on-one yarning opportunity with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter who can provide crisis support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
A self-exclusion (or self-ban) is where you request to be banned from specific gambling providers, products or services. Self-exclusion can be an important step if you are thinking about changing your gambling.
How do I get a self-exclusion?
Gambling providers are required to assist you if you request a self-exclusion. You can also contact your nearest Gambling Help Service to help you to exclude remotely from one or more venues without having to physically enter a venue.
How you arrange to self-exclude will depend on how you gamble. See below for more information.
Gambling Help Services can assist you to exclude remotely from one or more venues without having to physically enter a venue.
A Gambling Help service representative will help you to complete the Self-exclusion notice (Form 3A), as well as an Authority and identification form, which will allow the Gambling Help service to liaise with the venue/s on your behalf. The venue/s will send a copy of the completed Self-exclusion order (Form 3B) to you and the Gambling Help service.
A self-exclusion will take effect immediately and remain for up to five years, but you have a cooling off period of 24 hours.

Depending on the venue, you can choose to be banned from the whole venue, gaming machine area, or gambling activity (such as Keno or TAB), or a combination of these areas.
Ask to speak to the Customer Liaison Officer or the person nominated by the venue to assist with self-exclusion. This person will provide you with the self-exclusion forms and the contact details of your local Gambling Help service.
You will be required to complete a Self-exclusion notice (Form 3A) and provide a recent photo if requested. The Customer Liaison Officer will record your details and provide you with a completed Self-exclusion order (Form 3B).
A self-exclusion will take effect immediately and remain for up to five years, but you have a cooling off period of 24 hours.
If you choose to ban yourself from a casino, ask to speak to the person nominated by the casino to assist with self-exclusion. This person will provide you with the self-exclusion forms and the contact details of your local Gambling Help service.
You will be required to complete a Self-exclusion notice (Form 3A) which must be accompanied by a recent photo. The Customer Liaison Officer will record your details and provide you with a completed Self-exclusion order (Form 3B).

You may wish to consider installing software that blocks access to gambling websites.
There are a number of other ways to monitor or restrict access to the internet, take a look at:
- Net Nanny: General blocking software that protects children from inappropriate web content. Also available on iOS and Android devices.
- CYBERsitter: Filtering software allowing parents to choose their own sites to block.
- GamBlock: Specific blocking software for gambling websites. Also available for Android devices.
You may also want to familiarise yourself with the built-in controls on your mobile, tablet, PC or TV.
The Financial Counsellors’ Association of Queensland (FCAQ) is a not-for-profit organisation whose members provide a free and accessible financial counselling/paralegal service to low income and disadvantaged consumers. The Financial Counsellor's role is to provide consumers with access to effective, accountable and non-judgmental services to assist clients with relieving their financial difficulties.
Financial Counsellors are by definition independent and do not charge a fee for service.
Community Education
Gambling Help Services are funded to provide free community education to reduce harm from gambling in the community through primary prevention. They work to increase awareness and build community capacity to prevent and minimise harm from gambling.
They also provide training and support to gambling venues and staff on how to identify and respond to people experiencing harm from gambling.

The ATSILS is a community-based legal assistance organisation established in 1972 to advance and protect the legal and human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The hotline is available 24/7.
Youth Legal Advice Hotline
Young people (under 18 or people with a Childrens Court matter) can talk to a lawyer and get free and confidential legal advice about:
- their legal rights
- bail
- diversionary options
- getting legal representation
- being charged with an offence
- applying for legal aid
- concerns about talking to police
- other youth justice issues.
Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm, Friday 8am to Sunday 5pm (except for Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day).
